Why pay for a calculator?

Because the rules move. Rates, bands and credits change every Budget, and PRSI changed part-way through 2026. Premium is what pays for somebody to check each figure against Revenue and keep the tools current.

The basic calculator stays free and unlimited, with no account.

A worked example: 5 days of certified sick leave

Normal daily pay €110, over 13 weeks of service, none of this year’s statutory days used.

Days covered by statutory sick pay5 days
Daily rate: 70 % of normal pay, capped€77.00
Statutory sick pay for the period€385.00
Normal pay for the same days€550.00

The shortfall against normal pay is €165.00 for those five days.

How to read it

Statutory Sick Pay pays 70 % of normal pay up to a daily cap, for a limited number of days a year, and only after 13 weeks of service with a medical certificate. Two things people miss: your contract may be better than the statutory minimum, in which case the contract wins; and once statutory days run out, the next step is Illness Benefit from the Department of Social Protection, which is a separate claim you have to make yourself.

The figures in this example are produced by the same engine as the calculator above, using the 2026 tax year data. If a rule changes, they change here too.

Sick pay estimator

Sick pay in Ireland comes from two places that work differently. Your employer pays Statutory Sick Pay at 70% of your normal pay, capped per day, for a limited number of days. After that, Illness Benefit from the Department of Social Protection may apply, subject to PRSI conditions. This estimator separates the two and shows what is left uncovered.

This is an estimate

The result is based on the figures you entered and the rules published for the selected tax year. Your actual pay depends on your Revenue record, your contract and your employer’s payroll.

Common questions

How many paid sick days am I entitled to?
Five days of Statutory Sick Pay per year, paid by your employer at 70% of your normal pay up to €110 a day. You need at least 13 continuous weeks of service and a medical certificate.
Can I get Illness Benefit and Statutory Sick Pay at the same time?
In practice they follow each other rather than overlap. Illness Benefit has three waiting days and is normally claimed for the period after your statutory sick days run out. This tool models them in that order.
Is Illness Benefit taxed?
Illness Benefit is taxable, though USC and PRSI do not apply to it. Revenue usually collects the tax by adjusting your credits rather than taxing the payment at source.
What if my employer has its own sick pay scheme?
Many do, and it can be more generous than the statutory minimum. Enter it in the employer scheme fields — your contract decides how it interacts with the statutory entitlement.
