Understand your payslip in seconds
Three deductions decide what lands in your account. Here is what each one is, in plain language.
Income tax
Twenty per cent up to your standard rate band, forty above it. Your tax credits then come off the tax itself — not off your income.
Universal Social Charge
A separate charge on your gross pay, in bands. No credits, no relief, and a pension contribution does not reduce it.
Social insurance
Not really a tax: it buys entitlement to Illness Benefit, Jobseeker’s Benefit and the State Pension. Nothing below €352 a week.
What actually lands
Gross minus the three deductions, plus anything you have agreed to — pension, bike-to-work, union dues.
Your next euro
The rate on additional pay. It is what decides whether overtime is worth it, and it is always higher than your average rate.
Your real hourly rate
Net pay divided by every hour you are away from home, unpaid breaks included. Usually a good deal lower than the rate on your contract.
Where do these figures come from?
Rates, bands, credits and labour rules live in one versioned file, each with its official source and the date a person checked it. Nothing updates itself.

Why pay for a calculator?
Because the rules move. Rates, bands and credits change every Budget, and PRSI changed part-way through 2026. Premium is what pays for somebody to check each figure against Revenue and keep the tools current.
The basic calculator stays free and unlimited, with no account.
A worked example: €520 gross for 40 hours at work
One week, adult rate.
| Gross pay for the week | €520.00 |
|---|---|
| Hours at work | 40 h |
| Your effective hourly rate | €13.00 |
| National Minimum Wage | €14.15 |
At or above the minimum for this reference period.
How to read it
The minimum wage is checked against hours at work over a reference period, not against your contracted rate. That matters because unpaid time you are required to be there, and deductions for things like uniforms or till shortages, can pull the effective rate below the minimum even when the payslip rate looks fine. Board and lodging count in a specific, limited way. If the effective rate comes out below the minimum, that is a Workplace Relations Commission matter.
The figures in this example are produced by the same engine as the calculator above, using the 2026 tax year data. If a rule changes, they change here too.
Minimum wage checker
Enter what you were paid and the hours it covered. This works out your actual hourly rate and compares it with the national minimum wage for your category, for the year you select.
What you can do
If your rate looks short, check first whether the hours counted are the ones the law counts, and whether any lawful board or lodgings allowance applies. If it still looks short, the Workplace Relations Commission takes complaints about the national minimum wage.
